What exactly makes a traditional kitchen?
Ornamental details- unlike modern kitchens that tend to be sleek and minimal in design, traditional kitchens are a bit more elaborate. This doesn’t make the style over-the-top, with details usually being subtly placed. Often there are little details present in parts of the kitchen such as island legs, cupboard door handles, and architectural features such as ceiling beams, arches and hood surrounds.

Natural materials - traditional kitchens are usually made of stone and timber. This is because the traditions these kitchens are based on are from a time when those materials were all that was available. You can get kitchens made from a variety of different woods to create a traditional feel including walnut kitchens, light oak kitchens, beechwood kitchens and more. They also often feature antique finishes to make the materials look older or slightly distressed.

Raised panel doors - flat doors are more in keeping with the sleek aesthetic of a modern kitchen. To create a more ornate look in line with other details present throughout traditional kitchens, cupboard doors often have raised panels to add extra detail.

Soft, muted colours - this is an extension of the materials used. As a result of natural materials being used, you will mostly see traditional kitchens in warm, earthy colours.

There are various other details that can be found in traditional kitchens. Why not look through some of the kitchens we’ve done to get a better idea?

Of course, how your kitchen looks is entirely up to you. So, if you decide you want to mix elements of modern and traditional, that’s not a problem. We’ll help you work out the finer details.

If your property is listed, there may be some restrictions in place depending on what you want to do. Usually having a new kitchen fitted is fine, but if that requires an extension or any other similar work it’s best asking your local authority first just in case.

Don’t need a full kitchen? Sometimes it’s just certain parts that you want refreshed. JMT will help you there too, we also manufacture and fit cabinets, worktops and splashbacks. So if there’s something you’d like to change about your kitchen, let us know and we’ll help you get it the way you want it.
